February Garden Tasks
It’s so tempting isn’t it? All those seed packets, clean starter trays, a vision. Hold the phone…err, spade. There are other things you can do in February to get your garden fix.
Do a soil test. Your local hardware store or garden center carries these. Your soil is the foundation that your garden grows upon, and what goes on below ground is as important as what you do above ground. Soil tests are simple to do, and the results are easy to read. Knowing what is happening in the soil determines how you will prepare it for planting. Plus, it’s a neat science experiment for the kids.
Depending on where you live, determine your average date of last frost. If you are in the Denver metro area, that would be May 4. It’s time to start the following indoors: Celery, collards, kale, lettuces, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and kohlrabi. Plant seeds in moist soil and once sprouts appear, water the tray instead of the top of the plant. The soil will wick up the moisture and encourage strong root growth. Grow lights will be needed as you are aiming for 12-14 hours a day of light. These will be ready to transplant outdoors in 4-6 weeks.
Store your remaining seeds in a dry, cool place. Now is also a good time to inspect and clean your garden tools. Keep the vision!
